چکیده

3 Although existing storm tracking algorithms have been designed to operate in real-time, 4 they are also commonly used to carry out post-event data analysis and research. Real-time 5 algorithms can not use information on the subsequent positions of a storm because it is 6 not available at the time that associations between frames are carried out, but post-event 7 analysis is not similarly constrained. Therefore, it should be possible to obtain better tracks 8 for post-event analysis than what a real-time algorithm is capable of. In this paper, we 9 describe a statistical procedure to determine storm tracks from a set of identified storm cells 10 over time. We find that this procedure results in fewer, longer-lived tracks at the potential 11 cost of a small increase in positional error. 12

Downstream Self-Destruction of Storm Tracks

The Northern Hemisphere storm tracks have maximum intensity over the Pacific and Atlantic basins; their intensity is reduced over the continents downstream. Here, simulations with an idealized aquaplanet general circulation model are used to demonstrate that even without continents, storm tracks have a self-determined longitudinal length scale. Their length is controlled primarily by the planet...

Storm Track Dynamics

This paper reviews the current state of observational, theoretical, and modeling knowledge of the midlatitude storm tracks of the Northern Hemisphere cool season. Observed storm track structures and variations form the first part of the review. The climatological storm track structure is described, and the seasonal, interannual, and interdecadal storm track variations are discussed. In particul...

Modeling of Atmospheric Regional Circulation for Event of Most Severe Spring Dust Storms on West of Iran

Dust phenomenon is a natural occurrence that occurs widespread in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, especially in the sub-equatorial latitudes. This phenomenon is among the greatest environmental problems in the world. The release of this destructive climatic phenomenon in a scattered manner in the atmosphere varies in size, time and concentration. Since this phenomenon is influenced...

Future changes in extratropical storm tracks and baroclinicity under climate change

The weather in Eurasia, Australia, and North and South America is largely controlled by the strength and position of extratropical storm tracks. Future climate change will likely affect these storm tracks and the associated transport of energy, momentum, and water vapour. Many recent studies have analyzed how storm tracks will change under climate change, and how these changes are related to at...

Statistical Differences of Quasigeostrophic Variables, Stability, and Moisture Profiles in North American Storm Tracks

Three common synoptic storm tracks observed throughout the United States are the Alberta Clipper, the Colorado cyclone, and the East Coast storm. Numerous studies have been performed on individual storm tracks analyzing quasigeostrophic dynamics, stability, and moisture profiles in each. This study evaluated storms in each track to help diagnose patterns and magnitudes of the aforementioned qua...
